Yoga for the jilted gender

The title says it all. In this blog I will be talking about the Man Day we will be holding on the 18th of May 2019 in order to get man involved in Yoga and Aerial arts and hopefully raise some money to give to the charity CALM, The Campaign Against Living Miserably.

I'll be honest, I don't know much about CALM. In January I came up with the idea I wanted to get men more involved in our yoga and aerial arts classes and I thought it would be a great idea to run an event where we could raise money to donate to a man's charity. I knew a few and had put out a post asking men on my social media which charity would they like me to donate to. I had two replies! The first preferred I donated to a charity to help both genders as it felt wrong to discriminate, the second suggested a local refuge for men but they didn't know of any. I must admit I felt a little shocked that out of the four hundred people I had on my page I only had two responses and neither inspired me. How can I inspire men to take up yoga and aerial hoop if they weren't even inspired to help out a charity for their own gender. Now there are a lot of charities out there and I cannot give to all but choosing one was tough.

On Monday the 4th of March I received a text from my sister that Keith Flint, vocalist from The Prodigy had taken his life. My siblings and I were distraught! This was a band we had loved, had been to see live. Chantelle at work can tell you I was gutted to hear this news as I had only just educated this young 18 year old on the music of The Prodigy (yes I am showing my age now).

I then remembered the charity CALM. "CALM is the leading movement against male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK". Kindly a student of mine introduced me to another charity called the Eaton Foundation with a link to an article the female co founder had written, which referred a lot of negative comments she continuously receive for writing about women and the charity work she does for women yet people forget she also supports the Eaton Foundation a charity for men. So yes lets make it clear, I am holding a MAN'S DAY, where only men are invited to try out yoga and aerial hoop and all money made on the day will be going to a MANS charity. I'm not being sexist, it just feels right.

Before I was even thinking about donating to charity I was thinking about how can I get more men involved in my yoga and aerial hoop classes in my not so masculine purple studio in a very small town called Eastleigh. Now out of the 57 students that I have only 4 are men! So lets begin with the fact that actually Yoga was originally a mans thing. When people went to the circus it was the men you saw flying up in the air. Whats happened to you guys? Have you forgotten the wonderful benefits of relaxation through Shavasana, are you not missing the thrill of being up in the air. Let me re-awaken your souls to the joys of yoga and aerial hoop. Bring your friends, fathers, sons and brothers and let me show you what you are missing. Forget the stereotypes forget the stigma. Learn to feel something again, learn to breath, learn to de-stress, learn to fly and do it all for a good cause.

So MEN I invite you to our MAN DAY on May the 18th. Classes are an hour long each and only £5!

9.30am, 10.45am, 12pm Aerial Hoop

1.30pm, 2.45pm, 4pm Hatha yoga
